A 45-year-old woman from Brighton who was subjected to a litany of abusive messages on Facebook has won a landmark High Court order forcing the social network to reveal the identities of anonymous internet trolls who labelled her a paedophile and a drug dealer.

Sadly the ( perceived ) annonimity on-line is attractive to the mentality that enjoys hurting without tthe risk of getting hurt themselves.

The story is a little bit misleading. UK data protection laws prevent Facebook from handing over the ip addresses without a High Court Order. Many other articles on this suggest that Facebook provided no opposition, they just needed the Judge to order them (legally).

This might create some new problems, such as defining ' intent to defame ', and insulting comments, particularly as some people seem to call everybody ' b*****y idiots ' on the basis they'll be right some of the time. The whole ' freedom of speech ' issue is a minefield, as I 'm pretty sure some of our US members will agree!

Here's a report on the scentencing of another troll, from the legal terms used it looks as if there are several headings trolls could be prosecuted under, but as is always the case, legislation is playing ' catch-up ' with technology.
