GIMP Snag with Fedora 17

Today, I attempted to do something I've done routinely for work. I tried to use GIMP to open some of our PDF publications and clip images from them. But now, instead of getting the familiar dialog window to Import From PDF I get a dialog to Import From PostScript. This does not do what I need to do.

The PDF import dialog would show thumbnails of each page in the PDF file and allow me to select which pages I wanted to import and imports those as separate layers. The PostScript import dialog will only display the first page and import that as a layer without providing any way of accessing any other pages.

When I checked the Fedora 17 release notes for GIMP 2.8 I found this:

GIMP can use poppler to import PDF files, however GIMP 2.7/2.8 changed the license to GPLv3+/LGPLv3+, which is incompatible with the current poppler license (GPLv2 only). The upcoming poppler version 0.20 will be GPLv2/GPLv3 dual-licensed, making GIMP and poppler licenses compatible again. In the meantime, GIMP will use the PostScript plugin for importing PDF files.

I know that since it's been annotated there it's not technically a bug, but it is still a very unpleasant surprise that forced me to revert to Windoze.

GIMP 2.8 will import all of a PDF into separate layers for each page. In the pages dialog, just enter the page numbers of the pages you want to import..

1,4,8,11

or enter a page range..

1-12

Then, select "Layers" in the "Open as" drop down. You can easily preview the PDF outside of GIMP using Document Viewer.
