Upgrade guidance please

Having come to Fedora new at F16 I am now in the position of trying to decide whether to upgrade to F17 or do a new install keeping my Home partition.

I wuod like to know what others do, I use 32 bit KDE currently and probaby for this upgrade would stick to 32bit KDE. I guess if I wanted to go to 64bit a new install would be best but for now 32bit is fine. I also have no interest in Gnome, KDE does me fine.

I know I can do it either way but I am thinking an upgrade might be easier since I will not have to re-install everything I use.

What is others experience?

Stuart

Re: Upgrade guidance please

I didn't do the upgrade (F17 is my first) but I did a little research for you.
A post that summarizes the process and possible issues is at http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=280534

Other auxiliary links you can have a peek if needed:

or if doing through yum:

Re: Upgrade guidance please

Thanks for your reply, I know there is a lot of stuff around about how it should be done but what I was hoping for is that some folks who have upgraded would tell me how the got on and what (if any) undocumented problems they had. So what I am hoping for is some real world experiences and whether having done an upgrade they would do it again.

Granted, but that's what the first link summarizes.

Ok, I'll bite. Don't waste your time with an upgrade. Preform a fresh install instead.

Re: Upgrade guidance please

I used preupgrade-cli on two machines; the only issue major irritation I had was it booted the f16 kernel after the upgrade (which is a documented feature as the kernel moved to updates, and apparently not a bug).
A yum update imediately (really, immediately; or yum update kernel at a minimum) after the upgrade and a reboot (via the power switch, as per documented issues you can't shutdown/reboot with that darn f16 kernel running, it just panics.

After that when the f17 kernel was installed all was fine desktopwise...
- all my windows games worked fine under wine (f15->f16 I had to reinstall them, f16->f17 no probs)
- all my video editing and tv capture stuff kept working :-)
- all the non fredora stuff from rpmfusion seems to work fine
- basically desktopwise everything I had kept working

I would say if you are deciding whether to do a fresh install; keeping your home partition seperate; or preupgrade you should try preupgrade first. Simply because if preupgrade doesn't work for you, you can do the fresh install route anyway. And if it does work you have saved yourself recustomising all your apps.

My experience was upgrading a f17 desktop from f16 to f17 using preupgrade (in my case preuograde-cli; don't know if the gui preupgrade would differ that greatly) was apart from the kernel issue was relatively painless.
