recover usb drive after dd

I have a 2T usb drive
I wanted to write an image of my current desktop hard drive 200 GB to a directory on the 2T usb drive



UNFORTUNATELY

The image was writen to the usb drive and anything else is GONE

i have tried various tools (just reading ) the drive
but the tools only sees the 200Gb drive files ans nothing else

tools used were such as testdisk ; photorec;ddrescue

any suggestions as to how to go about to recover the files
(3 years of photos !!!~~ 1.1T)

The 200 GiB that was overwritten is gone, and cannot be recovered. Despite persistent internet rumours of security agencies being able to recover overwritten data, it simply cannot be done.

The remaining 1.8 TiB is potentially recoverable, but most likely essential file-system structure and meta-data were overwritten at the start of the disk, so recovery tools may struggle. Unfortunately I don't know of any good recovery tools other than those that you've already tried. What file-system was the USB device using? Ext2/3/4 store backup copies of the superblock throughout the file-system, which testdisk can use to help recover data.

If the data is of special importance to you, go to a professional recovery expert. Unfortunately it'll probably cost a fair whack.

Hmm, rather than spending money on the recovery expert, I'd suggest that you go to Zadar in Croatia with a few friends, rent a yacht and take some new photos...

I have had success with this http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...mat-Tool.shtml in the past, it's windows only I'm afraid and I don't know if it'll work with wine
