Lost video after yum update and reboot on F16 and F17

After install of F16 all was well but ran a yum update and rebooted to the newer (3.4.xxx x86_64) kernel and screen goes blank after grub menu. Could choose the original F16 (3.1.xxx_x86_64) kernel at grub and it would boot fine.

I decided to give F17 a try...
After a clean F17 installation all is working fine... Then run yum update and reboot into latest kernel... and screen goes blank again. Can reboot into older kernel and all works fine again.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

I have found other folks with same issues as far back as F12 but no solutions? I can post urls later...
or google bug report 29278 eDP causes blank screen...

Any help appreciated.

Re: Lost video after yum update and reboot on F16 and F17

You are not alone. These problems entered in full effect after kernel 3.3.
As soon as you get a working kernel ------- DONT upgrade it as soon as a new version comes.
Every kernel update has lately been a complete hazard.
I have a Dell XPS 1710 and at the moment I dont dare upgrading the kernel since it is working quite ok now.

Re: Lost video after yum update and reboot on F16 and F17

Reboot and select kernel 3.3 from the grub menu, then remove the 3.4 kernel.
THEN "yum install fedora-release-rawhide", then "yum --enablerepo=rawhide update kernel", then reboot on the F18 kernel.

Hopefully that kernel fixes the glitch you're experiencing, otherwise remove it and just stick with 3.3.

In your /etc/yum.conf, you can add a line "exclude=kernel*"
