vdpau HD video, high cpu

When playing HD videos, top shows my mplayer takes 2-3% cpu, with vdpau. While gnome-shell process takes 30%!
Kind of losing the effect of actually having vdpau offload to graphics card when gnome-shell is shooting upto 30%, Is this a bug?

I see the same behaviour in cinnamon.

File a bug report against gnome-shell because I doubt anyone here can help.

Try

strace -p `pidof gnome-shell`

to find out what gnome-shell is doing and if you see anything unusual ;-)

You can stop the output with ctrl-c
