Printing problem Fedora Core 3
Hello
I have a printing problem after updating kernel and cups.
Kernel: kernel-2.6.10-1.737_FC3
Cups: cups-1.1.22-0.rc1.8.3
I'm using SELinux.
The printer (HP) is not detected by the printer config. It gives a message:
Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds...
I've tested the printer port and printer in dos mode. Everything is working fine, so there is no hardware problem.
The printer is connected by LPT ( /dev/lp0)
It's also a problem with a printer connect with HP Jet direct. It gives a message:
Connected to hosts, sending print job...
Out put from dmesg:
lp: driver loaded but no devices found
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000154
printing eip:

Reinstall to kernel-2.6.9-1.724_FC3 and everything worked again.
Most likely something with the kernel and my Compaq Deskpro EXM.

USB right? well.. i thought HPs don't have problems with printing support on Linux.
My problem with printing is the lack of monitors.. (for inks, pending documents) i can't check what my printer is doing or what its status was.. well, it keeps on printing the test page - consumes a lot of ink even though i only have B/W.. sheesh

Thanks for posting. I had the same problem and suspected that either the kernel or cups was to blame. Reloaded old kernel and I'm back in action.

My father is having the same problem with a Lexmark Z32 printer connected to the parallel port (same dmesg call trace).

Got the same problem with kernel kernel-2.6.10-1.741_FC3, but found a solution on
web. Add these settings to the end of modprobe.conf
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378,0x278 irq=7,auto
