Program File Locations

In FC3, where are the Application Program files located. For instance, I am trying to select KPDF as my PDF file viewr in Firefox, but I don't know where to look for the executable.

Thanks,

Robyn

typically packages are installed to /usr/bin or usr/local/bin. there are of course exceptions to this, but they will be somewhere in usr.

One of the easiest ways to determine an executable's location is to open a terminal and use the which command:
Code:
$ which kpdf
/usr/bin/kpdf

Of course the files one usually needs to find for an application are not the executable files but rather the configuration files. I think there are no hard and fast rules about where they are - no nice APPLICATION_DATA folder for the whole machine.

You can also locate files (including data files and configuration files) with the "locate" command. You have to be running the "slocate" program periodically, but it's a VERY fast way to find files. It just scans your mounted partitions and creates a database list of EVERY file on your system.

Takes a while to run. (that's why it is typically scheduled to automatically start at night or the next time your machine boots), so some people turn this feature OFF.
