Fedora (Linux) Newbie!

Hello All!

I've been perusing this Web Site for a few days now and am very happy I found it! I've just decided that I should jump in and say HI!

Just recently, I decided that I'd like to take a kick at Linux. I searched and read up on all the different distros and finally decided on Fedora. It looked like the best one for a complete newbie.

It's been very over whealming I've got to say! I messed around for a while and lost interest as I was unable to do anything with it (due to my lack of experience). So finally I bought a Fedora Core 2 book and have been moving along pretty good!

My main reason for wanting a Linux box is I'd like to have an intranet set up so I can do web development on my laptop, that will all be uploaded and run on my Fedora Box. I also would like to have a nice little file and print server in my home as I've got 3 computers (other than the Fedora box).

Anyway! I just wanted to say HI! I'm excited, lost but having fun with this (new to me) thing in Fedora/Linux and think I'm going to be hanging out at this site a lot!

And yes Fedora is a good choice for a beginner, It is easy wth out being too hand holding , you still need to dig a little to get all the bells and whistles to work .

And this is a very good Forum to help you with this .

I am newbie to in Linux and I run FC3, so I am interesting to now what book you bought ?

The book I have is Beginning Fedora 2.

I bought it just before Core 3 was released (blargh) but that's ok. I figured I'll stick with Core 2 for now until I'm through with this book and ready to upgrade. Of course by that time, they'll probably be on Core 5 or so.

The first 4 chapters on the book are mixed with some pretty basic computer stuff (IE: getting connected to the internet, how to create a text editor document etc) mixed with some more Linux specific stuff like managing services. After that though it gets into the good stuff like the file system, the shell, setting up networks and a bunch of other stuff.

It does live up to the 'Beginning' name though as really only brushes the top of these subjects. A good kick start so far though I found. Especially for a complete noobie like me.

I'm pretty stoked about this stuff. It's very overwhelming but exciting and cool at the same time.

Any introduction to Linux is a good introduction, especially if it comes with a distribution. Many of the "basics" don't change, especially those used from the command line. And, if and when any particular program does change or something new comes along, you know enough to not burn yourself too badly.

Ok, thanks for the book tip !
Yes, Linux is a really cool OS.
To get support for Linux is real simple if you compare to W$$$$$S.
And a linux user is in full contol to tweak his computer to.
So be very careful when you run in 'root'-mode.
It is very easy to Crash the system, if you don't now what you are doing.
