Check out this link...it discusses the required dependancies for it to work:

mplayer in linux can play almost any video/audio format. I certainly haven't encountered any format that it can't play. Its also very easy to install different codecs (see http://fedoraguide.org/fc2/fc2beginn...tml#yummp3xmms
and
http://fedoraguide.org/fc2/fc2beginn...tml#yummp3xmms
)

But instead of adivising you on what to use and what not to use, let me just answer your question.

Yes, you can run windows media player through 'wine' in linux. I am in the process of writing a detailed tutorial on how to get IE,windows media player, Office2k and other windows applications can work in Linux through wine.
Please check out the following thread.
http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=47828

If you have any suggestions about that HOWTO, pl reply to the other thread.
thanks
-Anand

i would suggest "kaffeine media player" user interface for kde.update your repositories in (/etc/yum.repo.d) directory.install libdvdcss with yum.use yum to install it with "yum install kaffeine".
import the following third party repository keys:
"rpm --import http://rpm.livna.org/RPM-LIVNA-GPG-KEY-i386
rpm --import http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/dag/dries/RPM-GPG-KEY.dries.txt"
then add the files: /etc/yum.repo.d/livna.repo /etc/yum.repo.d/dagdries.repo

use vi to edit /etc/yum.repo.d/livna.repo:
[livna]
name=Livna for Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
baseurl=
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://livna.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/livna/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://mirror.atrpms.net/livna/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
ftp://mirrors.tummy.com/pub/rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
failovermethod=priority
#mirrorlist=http://rpm.livna.org/mirrorlist-5
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-livna

use vi to edit /etc/yum.repo.d/dagdries.repo:
[dagdries]
name=dagdries
baseurl=http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/dag/dries/fedora/fc5/i386/dries/RPMS/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1

then go to:http://kaffeine.sourceforge.net/ and dowload the mozilla plugin.install it (use the read me file for path insertion on the exact directory it should go in)example: ./configure--prefix=/usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.6/plugins.then close your browser and test it here: www.wedg.com
for live streaming music.

With almost everything, I suggest perusing the Stanton Finley guide

http://www.stanton-finley.net/fedora...ion_notes.html

That guide covers the setup of "many" of the things that end-users want to do with Fedora right off the bat. It does cover Amarok and gets mp3 playback going.
