Newbie - P3 sony with 64 meg laptop

Hi I install core 3 on a sony laptop which has a P3 chip and 64 megs of memory. It took 3 hours to install. fidora runs but it is very slow. It took open office spreed sheet two minutes to open. I installed workstation during my original install. Has any one have any ideas on how to make it faster. Or did I do something wrong. Next question will and older version of fidora run better?

Please have a look at the RELEASE-NOTES-en[.html] file(s) on the first CD or no the DVD, it lists the system requirements like;

Memory Requirements

This section lists the memory required to install Fedora Core 3.

* Minimum for text-mode: 64MB
* Minimum for graphical: 192MB
* Recommended for graphical: 256MB

So if possible increase the amount of ram on the laptop. Also try using a differnet Window/Desktop Manager other than Gnome or KDE. XFCE4 is included on the installation media for example, or maybe some other one; http://xwinman.org/

In answer to your other question, no an older versions of Fedora have the same memory and other requirements.

I'd second that. Things aren't the nippiest on my Sony P3 1GHz 256MB RAM laptop running FC3/GNOME and doing stats computing, opening OO.org etc, but certainly not that slow. I'm planning on maxing my laptop out to 512MB as soon as I find the time to go shopping

Same as told already. RAM is the biggest and quickest way to increase system performance....
