getting nic card hardware address

What system call can I use to get the hardware address of any network interface ?

I am looking NOT for 'ifconfig'

If you are writing a C program, what system/function call can you call to determine the hw address ?

How come when as root, I type "ifconfig eth0", I get the message, "bash: ifconfig: command not found"?

Try giving the full path name
/sbin/ifconfig
