Device not found

When installing the dreaded ATI drivers I get problems because it doesn't find the card. The card is an X850Xt on PCI-E. I get messages like :

"fatal error inserting fglrx No such device."

I have tried playing around with the BUS_ID part in the xorg.conf but it seems to ignore than an always say it is trying PCI:5.0.0

The N-Force drivers for the mobo are installed. My kernel is 2.6.10.766.

By the way, I upgraded from xorg R6.8.1 to 6.8.2 by compiling from source. How do I verify that actually worked and that it is using the new version? Did the "make install" just take care of that and override everything as needed?
