gnome not responding after bootup

ok, so here is a strange problem that happens from time to time after i log in.
so after gnome starts up, suppose i click on firefox or terminal or IM or whatever other app, the cursor shows busy for few seconds and then nothing happens.
if i continue to click on other progrmas, still nothing happens.
any ideas? Its frustrating b/c my current soln is to log out and log back in, but it used to work quite fine.

so any thoughts as to why gnome is not responding after i click to start programs?

I was having the same problem with FC4 until I updated gdm. I would click on a program and it would never show up. I was extremely frustrated and even went back down to FC3. It wasn't until I read the answer of what was happening on this forum that I tried it again with FC4! I undated gdm, and everything started to fly now. Programs opening as they should and terminal text showing as it should have been. It was perfectly a problem with gm.

Do you have same issue if you with other users or just with your main account? If not I would back up data such bookmarks and files from user account causing the problem...delete it and create a temp user and after a while recreate user. Sometimes we install apps or stuff the can damage an account.

no other users. so given that it's my main account, is there a way to fix it?
I am thinking about creating another user account and deleting my current one, is this what you are recommending?
