Question Postfix+mysql+httpd, etc server slow

I have the Fedora Core 1 Server with postfix(source code) httpd, mysql, courier-imap(source code). And i have 235 user´s of imap and sometimes them use webmail with squirrel and httpd with SSL. My server have 1024 MB of memory, and just one day the memory usage shoots up from around of 1gb and the cpu usage (irq(33,3) softirq(34,0) iowait(32,7)) up to 100%. the mail system and the browser access in the client are very slow. And the access to imap start to lose some conections to server, in some clients, so i restart the server and he back to normal.

Thank´s

This problem is a courier-imap bug??? the memory(100%) usage and the cpu(100%) after a time working? the linux does not liberate the used memory, so the system perfomance go to down, working very slow. I need a urgent help.

If the solution is really to change my courier-imap to dovecot, I will, but I would like to decide the problem with the current solution.

thanks again.

Memory usage at nearly 100% is not a bad thing as long as you are not swapping a lot. (actually, it's a good thing, you are using all of that really fast RAM to buffer data from your much slower disks).

When your system get's to 100% cpu, what does the "top" command show you is using the most memory/CPU ???

Well, when i restart my linux box, he work fine and without problem with normal cpu, but when my memory usage at nearly 100%, so the CPU get's to alternating between 0 and 100%, and the server´s performance goes to down, see my "top" command 3 hours after the boot:

11:07:53 up 3:34, 1 user, load average: 0.10, 0.17, 0.13
172 processes: 171 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states:cpu user nice system irq softirq iowait idle
total 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% 33.3% 33.2% 33.4% 0.0%
Mem: 1032756k av, 522520k used, 510236k free, 0k shrd, 72132k buff
162528k active, 291036k inactive
Swap: 522104k av, 0k used, 522104k free 172688k cached

In this case, the CPU get´s 100%, but he back to work normal. When the memory usage is 100% teh CPU is alternating full time, between 0 and 100%, and the all perfomance down. and some client´s loses the connection with the server, see the message from outlook:

Task 'mail.xxxxx.com.br - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Task 'mail.xxxxx.com.br - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Re: Postfix+mysql+httpd, etc server slow

I'm trying to configure an email server on fedora 13 with postfix, devecot , mysql (virtual users) and i have a problem with path to mail location. I configure mail_location= /var/vmail/ and he puts the mail in /var/vmai/"domain"/"domain"/user. My problem is, why he creates 2 domain folders. Can anyone tell me why? Thank you very much !
