not able to obtain a DNS and IP address

i installed FC3 on an IBM T22 Laptop and it detected the ethernet port during installation but now i cant get it to grab an IP from my Router. thanks,

Is your ethernet interface (usually eth0) actually up?

Run ifconfig and paste the results.

kind of hard to paste the if config but it says after scope: LINK UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST


but like when i try to activate it from the GUI it says it can't obtain an IP .

like i did ifdown eth0 and then when i do ifup eth0 it says that it cant determine the ip info

Why is it hard to paste the results of ifconfig? You can use your mouse to select, then rightclick and select Copy.

Please try this and paste the full results from ifconfig.

i don't have internet on the laptop im using.. the ethernet is down

im postin on my windows machine

lol... good point.

How about running mii-tool eth0 and copying down the 1-line result from that.

Another thing to try is running (as root) tcpdump in another window immediately after ifup eth0, the idea is to try to capture the DHCP traffic that is failing.

Yet another thing to look at is your DHCP server log to see what its opinion is, or if it even claims to have heard the request.
