Transparency

Sorry if this question may seem stupid to the advanced Linux Users, but...

I will have my PC up and running next week. I've seen screenshots that have transparent toolbars, menu's & terminals. How is it done? Is it possible in Gnome or KDE?

Stock KDE can do transparemt toolbars and terminals at least... it is done is a boring way ;-) The terminal app looks up what your background is and copies a rectangle of it, suitably dimmed or brightened... in short it is fake transparency, not really showing what is behind.

xorg has been extended to have real transparancy and I guess that will be in Fedora soon.
