at some point in time, i removed the drive and plugged it in again.

now i've checked my /media/ folder, but all there is is "cd rom"

The drive works fine in windows xp

oh, another interesting point

I have updated my kernel....so i have 3 versions

2.6.11-1.27_FC3
2.6.11-1.14_FC3
2.6.9-1.667

now, the oldest version (2.6.9-1.667) works with no problem for the USB drive. Plug in and works straight away.

The two newer ones don't work

anyone know what could be wrong?

2.6.11 seems to have screwed up hald, hotplug, dbus, autofs and all kinds of stuff to do with usb, my machine crashes at shutdown if you unplug a usb drive. it's a known bug supposedly fixed in 2.6.11-1.27 or something.

hotplug seems to be the latest available, as it is not on the live update list

just another question whilst i'm here

i have a motorola e398 mobile phone, and when i plug it in...it comes up as "SANVOL" in the my computer thing.

and i can access it fine no problems.

I was just wondering, is there a way to get it to appear on the desktop, like my usb key etc.?
i tried dragging it to my desktop, and i get this picture of a pencil with a line through it, which i guess means can't write to it?

cheers

yeah i tried updating that lot before -it fixes automounting (new hal does that alone) but it then causes my laptop to crash at shutdown if you unplug the drive.

yes I got the same symptoms when I unpluged my drive before shutting down "Stopping atd:kernel panic - not syncing etc."
I never noticed the bug before, since I never unpluged my drive before shutting down. The issue is fixed with the 2.6.11-1.27 kernel however.
