Fedora Core for Intel Wireless Chipset on Centrino Laptop

Hi,

I was wondering if Fedora had implemented support for the Intel Wireless Chipset provided in the Centrino based Laptops.

Haven't played with it but here is a link to the Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Driver for Linux - http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/

You can always use another wi-fi card if the built in one isn't supported.

Hi. Yes, there is full support in Fedora Core with the 'ipw2200' module and 'wireless-tools'. I use my "Intel Corp. PRO/Wireless 2200BG (rev 05)" daily, both with high and low speed wireless networks, without any problems. (Fedora Core 3, kernel 2.6.11-1.27_FC3)

Same here, been using the ipw2200 for b/g networks reliably for quite some time, since FC2 at least. Now using the same setup as the above poster.

I have an IBM T42 with ipw2200. I tried Core 3 a few months ago and that did NOT come with ipw2200 support "out of the box". I had to use that idiswrapper thing and it was very unrelieble. Does this Core 4 have support for Centrino/IPW2200 "OUT OF THE BOX"? I'm asking this question because I'm on the verge of removing Core3 and install Ubuntu since Ubuntu has IPW2200 support out of the box. But if Core 4 also supports IPW2200 OUT OF THE BOX (i.e. does NOT require this ndiswrapper work-around), then I will stay with Fedora since I'm more familiar with this distro.

Thanks for all the help.

EDIT:
Ok, after reading some past postings it seems that Core 4 DOES support IPW2200 out of the box. But could some one confirm that just to be certain ? Thanks!

I have used FC3 and FC4 on my Centrino based laptop with everything including wireless successfully automatically set up. Thumbs up!

Just out of curiousity, do you know why my Core3 didn't work automatically but yours did? Was it because your kernel was more up-to-date?

My IPW2200 did not work out of the box on FC3 or FC4 either...finally got it working by using atrpms and yum to install the IPW2200 stuff ...driver + kernel modeule + firmware....i could be wrong....but i don't think it works out of the box....

What the... So you are saying Core4 does NOT work with IPW2200 out of the box but psycho_circus is saying that Core4 does. Hum, does anyone know what's going on here? scooter62, are you using a T42 by any chance?
And thanks for your information. I may need to ask you exact what you did to make it work (if I run into trouble setting up my FC4)

ipw2200 works with FC4 with build in drivers but not out of the box, you need to download firmware (just download and put it in /lib/firmware, you don't need to compile or install anything other).

hi pzad, I have FC4 installed and have the same internal wireless Intel Pro 2200BG. Have posted several threads here and spent the whole week but still unsuccessfully got it to work. Can you be more details on how to install the firmware? Do I have to update the Driver, and kernel module as I have seen in other threads too? Thanks in advance.

Hi Lads,

Can anybody give a quick guide to getting the Inter Pro 2200 Internal Wireless Card working with Fedora Core 3 or 4, as it won't seem that the card isn't supportted automatically

MHynes, the easiest way is using the apt or yum rpm manager systems. If you have apt configured it is as easy as 'apt-get install ipw2200-firmware ipw2200-kmdl-2.6.11-1.27_FC3' (or whatever kernel version you have for the second package). I think wireless-tools already comes with the distribution. If not is just another 'apt-get install wireless-tools'. After installing the firmware, the kernel should detect your wireless card (for instance, at the next reboot 'kudzu' should find it and ask you whether to configure it or not).

Since wireless is my only way of accessing the internet, I will not be able to use yum or apt-get. Could you list the packages I need (and maybe places to find them) so that I can download them from a different machine and copy to the FC4 one to install locally?

Thanks! p.s. I'm going to install FC4 in about an hour. Hopefully I made the right choice (not installing Ubuntu instead).
