Installing gst-plugins for MP3

Hi,
I've downloaded amarok so I can play my MP3s but needed the gst-plugins before I can use it.
I've now got the plugin file, but I'm very inexperienced at installing through a console and wonder if someone can give me the correct procedure. I've unzipped the tar.gz so I have a folder gst-plugins-0.6.3 ready to install. I'm fairly sure I know how to navigate to the folder via the console, but what should I do next? I tried ./confire / make / make install but it kept failing - I'm obviously missing something.
Thanks,
Red Devil

Have you looked in the directory for a redme? Usually there is a wealth of knowledge in these files. Which, of the ./configure ./make ./make-install fails?

See `config.log' for more details.

I've checked the config.log but, to be honest, it might as well be in Aramaic for all the sense it makes to me. Hope you can help. Regards,
