using in a terminal
uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 #1 Thu Jun 2 22:55:56 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
is my kernel/creation date for FC4
will show when the "kernel" was created--each file/app/program/script has a creation date which can vary as to when it was "installed" to when it was added/created into an iso file or rpm--etc
right clicking a file/app/whatever in your desktop with konqueror/nautilus or file browser will give "properties" which lists creation dates but that could be when it was "installed" to your drive--sometimes when it was made/rebuilt by the author--etc.

Try:
Code:
ls -l /etc/fedora-release
OR
ls -l /etc/passwd
edit: nevermind - these don't work

Now are you thoroughly confused after using these commands?
There are a LOT of different people working on these releases and just about any command for different files will show different dates--result is a varied bag of "creation dates"..
and if you have had the install for a few days the command
ls -l /
will really give you a mixed bag of dates..
