Unhappy USB thumb drive and FC3

Hi all,

I have a SanDisk 1 GB USB stick which mounts correctly under Gnome in FC3 (displays as the Removable Disk icon on the desktop). I am able to see the file contents, read, and write to it. But when I detach the drive FC3 just freezes and I have to reboot manually. I tried to right-click the drive icon on the desktop and select 'Unmount' before removing the stick and still get the same problem. I checked the drive under KDE and lo and behold, it doesn't even auto-mount as in Gnome. I checked under /media/ and the USB drive wasn't displayed.

The USB thumb drive auto-mounts perfectly under FC4 (both Gnome and KDE) and doesn't freeze the system after I detach it. I connected the stick under Windows XP; again I faced no problems. So, I guess its an issue only under FC3. Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks for all the help so far on this forum!

Do you still have any files open on the device when you remove it?

Is there an file browser open showing the contents of the device?

I always right click on the device and Unmount it before I remove it (well OK - MOST times I remember to do that first!)

I had a similar issue that went away with a kernel upgrade. The problem was widely reported and bugzilla'ed. Check out the following.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=155472

Just upgrade to the newest kernel version for FC3 and you'll be all set.

Hi Duncan and Jim,

Sorry for replying late, I got busy on some other project. Well, I close Konqueror (which I use for file browsing), close all open applications, and Unmount the drive before removing it. Yet, I face the same issue. I will try upgrading the kernel and get back to you.

Thanks guys for the suggestions!

Another thing you may want to do is pay attention to the logs when you're using the USB stick with FC3. You can look through /var/log/messages, which should at least show you when the stick was first seen.

You could also unmount the stick from the terminal and see if you get any error messages that way. Post the messages if you can't make sense of them.
