Cannot login as root in runlevel 5 after updating

I use FC3 and after running "yum update" I cannot login as root using the GUI , I get the message "root cannot login". If I login as a regular user there is no problem.
I modified the /etc/inittab changing the runlevel from 5 to 3, rebooted then I can login as root in text mode and then execute the command "startx" so I can use kde as root.
tia for any tip, advise or suggestion

weird.. only thing i can think off right off hand is that the root= option in gdm.conf got set to false becuase it sounds like its gdm thats denying it not gnome/kde. check here: /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and see if root=false under the [security] section.

i wouldnt have a clue how an update disabled it but worth a shot i suppose

hth,
Joseph

Thanks for trying to help Bytesniper, but I use KDE so I don,t have the /etc/X11/gdm folder installed.
I'll have to try something else.

It is a security feature.

It was first implemented in FC4.

I'm guessing that is what you meant by 'upgrading'?

ByteSniper forgot a bit in the file path. You want: file:///etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

Look for this:
[security]
# If any distributions ship with this one off, they should be shot
# this is only local, so it's only for say kiosk use, when you
# want to minimize possibility of breakin
AllowRoot=false

and change it to true

EDIT: In KDE I think you change it in the KDE control center

GDM is actually a funciton of GNOME not KDE. you have it in there somewhere. all else fails drop to a console and type locate gdm.conf becuase that IS the file you need.
