Anyone know how to take a screenshot from the CLI

Does anyone know how to take a screenshot from the CLI specifically a screenshot of X from a tty? I want to take a screenshot of 3ddesktop while its running but I can't do it from X while its running.

you can try something like:
% sleep 3; import -window root shot.png
than quickly minimise terminal and invoke 3ddesk event - work out with timeing and you will shoot it.

oh. import comes from ImageMagick package. there is also excelent utility called scrot - for screenshot from CLI. BTW you are using GNOME or KDE? have you tried to just press PrtScr? it should work... :>

Thanks that worked although I had to reverse the order of the command string. Ah command line sometimes I hate it but at times like this I love it and couldn't live without it. Do you happen to have any idea if its possible to do something simillar with video? [basically I want to capture 3ddesk's animations.]

you can try with vnc2swf and vncserver... but I don't know if it would record OpenGL stuff... it would be rather a slideshow than a movie... there is also xvidcap... or maybe try running 3ddesk in really small resolution like 640x480 (f.e. spawning X server in this res. or using Xnest) - that should allow video capture... with bigger you can have problems with recording it...
