Wine - Install program
Hi all. I am trying to install a java based game with Wine. I have never installed anything using wine before and have run into a problem. This is the error message I get:
Code:
This program requires Internet Explorer version 3.0 or later.
How can I install IE with wine and is *ahem* legal to do so, if not where can I get it? I have paid for XP and have it on a partition if files are needed. The game is called Play4FunPoker. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Dan.
PS. The version of wine i am using is the one on this forum as compiled by BrEakbEaTs at this address

PS: I just tested to see if it was because Wine wasn't installed properly but it is because is have installed the following:
Foobar2000
Picasa2
And they both work fine.

Ok, I have downloaded and installed Winetools and run through almost everything except that I cannot install IE6. I get a message saying it cannot connect to the internet. Anyone else know why this might be, firewall setting perhaps?

You said you have Windows on another partition: your installation of wine uses the real Windows partiton or not?

No, it doesn't use the real one, ~/.wine directory. I just downloaded tha full version and that won't install either...

Wine can emulate a Windows environment in two ways: by using its own dlls, or by accessing the real windows dlls in a real windows installation.
I don't know much of the rpm version, because when I tried it I've always used the source tarball. In this case, during the installation, I was asked if I wanted to use an existing windows installation or not. In the first case, I could access all of the windows programs I had - and explorer was obviously installed.
The installation from source it's not difficult and it's managed by the "wineinstall" script. You have only to ensure that you have read/write access to the windows partition and that this partition is mounted when you first install and later use wine. Wine doesn't mess with your real Windows.
You should read the docs that come with wine: the manual explains very well how to configure a real or a fake windows environment for wine.
If you want to remove wine, there'a "make uninstall" option that can clean your files.

Thanks for advice. I want to get rid of windows at some point so it may not be the best choice in my case. I might try and uninstall, read-up as you say, and try again.

I'm struggling with wine at the moment. I want to use a fake windows, but I want to pull dll's and registry files from my real win install. The dll I only need to copy, but how do I patch the wine registry with my real one?

This link should be useful.
http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/wine-user/index
take a look at sections 3.4, 3.5.7 and 3.7.

thanks,
I've been looking through that though for awhile, and I'm convinced I doesn't say how to extract the registry from a real win install to use in a fake one. I think I'm going to work on reinstalling my apps into a clean reg for now.
I'm also going to do an install from source as you suggested.
