First off this is a dual boot; FC4 / Win2k.
W2k was first. Installed FC4 to free space of hard drive w/ onboard video. Installation went fine. FC4 installed w/o a hitch and I was able to login to Gnome and had my resolution set to 1024x768x16.
Then I wanted to install a dedicated (albeit older) video card (Millenium 2; I know...blech!). Anyway, FC4 detected, installed and brought up Gnome fine, but Win2k didn't like it (didn't think I needed drivers, but apparently I did.) So, I figured it was no great loss and was just going to go back to the onboard video.
Well, after removing the old video card Win2k came up fine, but FC4 displays a black Gnome login screen now!? I can ctl+alt+f1 to give me a text login. I can also type my username/password on the black screen and it logs me on, so I know something's there and it's not just a "black" screen.
I tried lowering my resolution in xorg.conf. No dice. I deleted the video config in xorg.conf and when I reboot FC4 redetects my onboard video. Everything is displayed on the monitor fine right up until the Gnome login and then it goes black.
I also tried putting the Matrox card back in. FC4 detected it again, but now gives me a black screen. When I took it out and switched back to onboard video FC4 redetected my onboard video fine and I didn't get a black screen the first time I loaded Gnome. Logged in and everything looked fine. However, when I rebooted, worked in Win2k for a bit, rebooted again but this time went into FC4, my screen was black again!?!
I am thoroughly confused. Anyone have any ideas?
BTW - My mb is an Intel D845GLLY, w/ Celeron 1.7, 384 MB ram. The onboard video is set to share 8 MB (maxed) of system ram.
