How to clean up old kernel files ?

hi,

I noticed that everytime i upgraded to a newer kernel, my diskspace decreased significantly.

Anyone knows a good and safe way of removing old kernel files ?

besides i always boot into the new kernel without any problem so i would love tor remove the old kernel to save space.

thanks

If you installed the kernel via rpm, just do

rpm -ev --test yourkernel

then, if no error message appears, repeat the command without the --test option. If you installed vanilla kernels from source, remove their source trees and delete the kernels with initrd and map files in the /boot directory, and their modules directory in /lib/modules/kernelversion; also update the grub menu removing the old entries.

I am trying to remove the kernel that's originally installed with fedora core 4 .2.6.11_FC41369

so i would just do rpm -ev --test 2.6.11_FC41369 ?

yes. try the command: with the test option will do no arm at all.
it will warn you if the package name is wrong or if there are dependencies to be satisfied (you have to remove the corresponding kernel-devel package, for instance)

This works for both FC3 and FC4.

rpm -qa | grep kernel

To check if you're right...

EDIT: Yea, check the above link

That's just an example. Do "rpm -qa | grep kernel" as root to see what you've got, then "yum remove <whatever> <whateverdevel>" as root to remove the old kernels and kernel-devels.
