steam on wine

i followed directions on here:

.. compiled latest wine version, .... ran steaminstaller which seemed to install fine, it even put steam shortcut on my desktop. but if i run steam, i get an "updating steam" which goes to 100% then a large window comes up with steam.exe but its just black..

.. now it's obviously doing something...
my processor is around 85%, ram is up to 440MB, swap is at friggin 771 MB.. so im tryin to figure out what is goin on. and it won't let me exit steam -- unless i run system monitor and kill wineserver and winepreloader.
