FC4/Ubuntu 5.10 for my New Dell Inspiron 6000 ???
Hello All,
I have looked at several distros and I have finally zeroed on FC4 and Ubuntu to install on my laptop. I also want to dual boot the linux distro with my factory installed Windows XP. The reason being still there are a vast majority of people that I have to communicate on a daily basis who might send me apps that display in their entriety only on windows. For example the word docs with tracking features etc.
I am also wondering if I can read/write access winxp from linux and vice versa. This is important as I dont want to switch from one OS to the other all the time. If this is not possible then what other options exist? I installed ntfs drivers on my office FC4 but i guess I can only read from the ntfs partition but no write capabilities. If writing to NTFS currently is not available (Ubuntu and Fedora) then can I create a separate fat 32 partition and put all my data in it, so that I can access from both the partitions?
Or is my idea of installing linux on my laptop is really bad?
Also I am leaning towards ubuntu as I have read that it just works out of the box and the new 5.10 is really kewl. Ubuntu has also been recently awarded the best distro award.
So please let me know if I should go with FC4/Ubuntu/No Linux for my laptop.
Thanks
Dayal

Hi,
i don't know Ubuntu.
Seperate fat32-partition would be best idea.
There are drivers for winxp so win can read/write ext2 (ext3) but i haven't testet.
I use Fedora 4 on a Asus-Notebook.

If you have a fast laptop, you can run windows inside fedora/ubuntu with vmware or qemu.
You might want to check out wine too, it can run windows programs on linux.

Man, I am really impressed with Ubuntu 5.10. I've just installed it two days ago and I'm now astonished. Many things that I've never been able to do in Fedora works flawlessly in Ubuntu. I'm really rediscovering Linux.
I had many difficulties doing basic things in applications I love, like amaroK, for instance. It crashed all the time and never works the way it is meant to. IPodder is another example. See my posts here in this forum trying desperately to solve the endless python dependencies. There are many others applications I just couldn't use without spending hours searching for help.
But I owe to Fedora all I know about Linux today. It is a distro to people who wanna know what's under the hood. I don't believe, however, it is a distro to the common guy who uses his box just to do other things. If you want to explore Linux go with Fedora. You will certainly pay a price for this, but I believe it is worth the effort. Otherwise, if you don't want to have much headache I do recommend Ubuntu.

Hi guys...
I installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my new Dell Inspiron 6000 and its really kewl. The installation went really fabulous. The FC4 installer is better than the Ubuntu 5.10's in the sense that its graphical and all. Ubuntu recognized all my hardware properly. I could go online with my wireless card instantly. I am going to install RHEL later today on of my desktops and I am going to run a webserver on it. I am also planning to install gentoo on my sony desktop time permitting. Gentoo is supposed to be fast and all after the tedious compile-install process. I will post my results after i get done.

I use both, Fedora 4 and Ubuntu on my laptops. Fedora works quite okay but is a bit buggy and sluggish on my 1Ghz lappy. Ubuntu is working well on my other laptop (1,2 Ghz) but has some bugs, too. What you need to be carefull about Ubuntu is that some models tend to overheat with Ubuntu 5.10. So check carefully if your laptop is also one of the potential "heating" victims.
