    Yum update problem

    Here is what I get....

    [root@localhost ron]# yum update

    [root@localhost ron]#

    Any suggestions? Further, I did not configure FC4 as layed out by smfinley's guide - and am wondering if I might be wise to re-install or simply trudge along learning as I go. If I were to re-install, are my personal files likely to be lost?

    Thanks,

    ron

    I am informed that the files will be lost. (Thanks SF)

    Clearing the upstream cache with something like these commands (for your troublesome repository of course) seems to help. Be sure to do a "yum clean all" as root before you do this:
    Code:
    wget --cache=off http://apt.sw.be/fedora/4/en/i386/dag/repodata/filelists.xml.gz
    wget --cache=off http://apt.sw.be/fedora/4/en/i386/dag/repodata/primary.xml.gz
    wget --cache=off http://apt.sw.be/fedora/4/en/i386/dag/repodata/repomd.xml
    wget --cache=off http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/4/i386/core/repodata/repomd.xml

    Thanks, although that didn't work. I cleaned all via yum, and I ran all those commands, but got the same error. So, I am guessing the best thing to do would be to reinstall FC4.

    I wouldn't reinstall, it may be a problem dag. I've been having the exact same problem over the past few days. It doesn't happen every time I try to run yum update. For example early today it worked fine.

    Try "yum --disablerepo=dag update" as root.

    I just followed smfinley's wget -cache=off directions and it fixed the problem.

    Unlike ironee, I did follow smfinley's guide after I installed FC4. Maybe that is why his suggestion worked for me when had not worked for ironee?

    For what it's worth, this is what I got after all upstream cache clearing:

    i seem to have broken my yum. I followed Smf's guide (great guide thanks) originally, but on my new AMD64 install I just copied the old file across from my old /etc

    now I'm getting

    [root@ORION yum.repos.d]# yum update
    Setting up Update Process
    Setting up repositories
    core 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
    dries 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
    dag 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
    ftp://ftp.cse.buffalo.edu/pub/fedora...ta/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: [Errno ftp error] timed out
    Trying other mirror.
    Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: ftp-ftp.cse.buffalo.edu-pub-fedora-linux-core-4-i386-os-
    failure: repodata/repomd.xml from ftp-ftp.cse.buffalo.edu-pub-fedora-linux-core-4-i386-os-: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.

    I've done a 'clean all' and the wget's. What I don't understand is what repomd.xml file yum is looking for.
    My confusion may stem from not understand wget properly. The comands

    wget --cache=off http://apt.sw.be/fedora/4/en/i386/da...lelists.xml.gz
    wget --cache=off http://apt.sw.be/fedora/4/en/i386/da...primary.xml.gz
    wget --cache=off http://apt.sw.be/fedora/4/en/i386/da...ata/repomd.xml
    wget --cache=off http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linu...ata/repomd.xml

    appear (to me) to import 2 repomd.xml files to the local directory, in which case the freshrpms one would overwrite the former. Probably something else is going on here.

    any help appreciated

    I did this......

    Try "yum --disablerepo=dag update" as root.

    .... and though it took a few minutes, chugging along - it resulted in the same thing. Which is this....

    [root@localhost ron]# yum update
    Setting up Update Process
    Setting up repositories
    core 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
    dries 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
    dag 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
    livna 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
    //var/cache/yum/freshrpms/repomd.xml:1: parser error : Document is empty

    ^
    //var/cache/yum/freshrpms/repomd.xml:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found

    ^
    freshrpms 100% |=========================| 0 B 00:00
    http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linu...ta/repomd.xml: [Errno -1] Error importing repomd.xml for freshrpms: Error: could not parse file //var/cache/yum/freshrpms/repomd.xml

    failure: repodata/repomd.xml from freshrpms: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from freshrpms: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.

    So I am almost completely convinced to re-install FC4.

    Reinstalling won't help. Try "yum --disablerepo=dag --disablerepo=freshrpms update" as root. I am able to intermittently connect and update with the solutions described above if I am patient. I'm pretty sure something is up with the European repos or a recent version of yum or rpm, maybe a bug, but with a little patience it will work.

    As you say, patience may be the key.
    Everything worked fine for me yesterday after following your clear all and wget suggestions. I even tried it a second time after I posted the results and it ran without error. Then this morning I did another Yum update after reading saibaggins post and got the following:
    [bfjonas@localhost ~]$ su -
    Password:
    [root@localhost ~]# yum update
    Setting up Update Process
    Setting up repositories
    core 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
    dries 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
    dag 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
    //var/cache/yum/freshrpms/repomd.xml:1: parser error : Document is empty

    ^
    //var/cache/yum/freshrpms/repomd.xml:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found

    ^
    freshrpms 100% |=========================| 0 B 00:00
    http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linu...ta/repomd.xml: [Errno -1] Error importing repomd.xml for freshrpms: Error: could not parse file //var/cache/yum/freshrpms/repomd.xml
    Trying other mirror.
    Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: freshrpms
    failure: repodata/repomd.xml from freshrpms: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from freshrpms: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
    [root@localhost ~]#

    So I then did the whole clean up and wget routine again. After that, I had a successful yum update.

    Thanks for your posts Stanton, you are a great resource.

    Stanton (and a thanks to bfjonas), my patience was preceeded by following your link to the FC4 download - and apparently slecting and thus wasting 4 CDs (SRPMS) before finally getting the appropriate CD images. And as I came back to take one final look here, seeing that the patience thing may prevail, I ran that final command you (Stanton) offered and voila, I am now able to get updates.

    On your site, your 'header' explains how user-friendly Linux can be now. I am still very unskilled in it, but am convinced I will not again pay for Microsoft Software (and software built on that platform). However, seeing as how there are many now who have done much work in developing OS's like Fedora Core, I am interested in learning how to contribute in more than simply a regular user. For instance, I have a Lexmark scanner/printer that's scanner is apparently not supported; and I would like to learn how to assist in building such a driver. Do you have any suggestions on what books to read or forums on the internet to learn the basics on up to advanced things?

    Thanks for all of this,

    ron
