soundcard detected but no sound

i installed fedora core 3 last night and my soundcard was detected;

Vendor: Ensoniq
model: ES1371 [AudioPCI-97]
Module: snd-ens1371

when I press the "play test sound" button i hear the 3 sounds as I should.

but when i put a cd in the drive, i cant hear it.

why is this and what can i do to fix it? i haven't tried playing mp3/wma files yet, but will i get the same problem?

thanks
john the confused "year-long" user

Audio cd?
You used kscd ?
Try installing xmms, with all the plugins. Kscd can't do digital audio extraction (yet), but xmms can.

xmms was installed (i think with all plugins)

ill take it kscd is a cd player.

all i did was stick the cd in the drive and then i choose the "CD Player" from the menu (on GNOME).

I'm not sure it can play it, as i understand, there must be a cable form the cd-drive to the motherboard for "analog" cd-play. Xmms has a "digital" play system for audio cd's, so the cable is not needed.
try in a terminal:
xmms -p -e /dev/hdx
where hdx is your cd-drive (hdb, hdc, or hdd, usually)
but first open it's configuration options and search for audio cd, or cdplayer or something (i'm currently downloading xmms) and configure it.

CD Player Sucks !
run this command..
Code:
rpm -qa | grep xmms
if no output install with yum
yum install xmms
optional packages...
xmms-mp3
xmms-wma
xmms-skins

depending on the repos you have will determine if you can obtain these..
If the fedora extras is not in /etc/yum.repos.d/ then you'll need to add it

as root gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo
and add the following
Quote:
###################
## Fedora Extras ##
###################

[extras]
name=Fedora Extras - $releasever - $basearch
baseurl=http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/fedora/extras/$releasever/$basearch/
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/extras/$releasever/$basearch/
http://mirror.hiwaay.net/redhat/fedora/linux/extras/$releasever/$basearch/
http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/$releasever/$basearch/
# http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/$releasever/$basearch/
gpgcheck=0
click save then run yum update
then yum search xmms
this will list out the available packages you can get related to xmms

Thanks, that helped, although when I looked with yumex, the necessary file was xmms-cdread.
