need help on Fatal: error inserting acpi_cpufreq ... No such device

Since i installed kernel 2.6.13-1.1532_FC4 i get FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq ... No such device at the boot process. I don't know if the next problem is related to it, but my Fedora Core 4 seems to crash a lot lately, i tried booting an older kernel, but i keep getting the same problem.

I really would appreciate some help on these problems.

This just started happening on my parents box. I was able to boot by choosing 2 kernels back. But, the message sill appears and it says dhcpd fails. I would like to find an answer also...

This all depends on your CPU. For me, doing this worked:

Go in as root:
edit the file '/etc/cpu/cpuspeed.conf'
Uncomment the DRIVER line, and set it to 'p4-clockmod'

My celeron doesnt work with acpi-cpufreq, nor stepspeed or powernow.

This seemed to be the only driver working on my Celeron for the new kernel. Never got the error since then.

greenorange,

Thanks for posting this, it's the first thing I've found that worked on my computer since I started trying to fix this error.

I actually disabled my cpuspeed even though I fixed it (the driver was bad; my box was making odd sounds and the daemon slowed my apps). This cpuspeed is a powermanagement tool; It makes the cpu run at different frequencies depending on workload, disabling it makes it work at maximum - ideal for laptops to save battery, but not for desktops. To disable, enter the Desktop - System Settings - Services, and uncheck cpuspeed. DO NOT STOP IT, or it will halt the cpu on the frequency its currently set to, and you will need to reboot.

However, if youre fine with the cpuspeed, dont worry about it.

I too had the same problem. I first edited cpuspeed.conf file and replaced it with "p4-clockmod". Also went in and unchecked cpuspeed.

Now I dont see the problem. Thanks greenorange.

By unchecking cpuspeed, you simply disabled it So whether the problem is solved or not is yet to be determined. Try enabling it, then reboot. If it runs smoothly (hopefully without squeaky noises like my machine) then you can leave the option cpuspeed checked. Very helpful if you run a laptop.

Cpuspeed should be unchecked if:
1.) Changing the config file didnt work
2.) It worked, but the system runs odd.

As you said I might have disabled it which is ok as I am working on a desktop. I am keeping it checked on my laptop.

I have been having this problem for a couple of kernels now. It had been working fine. An Asus mother board with AMD 64 chip. Then noticed that it running louder (it is in the bedroom). Saw the message on boot up and thought it was something that would get fixed in the next go round, but it is still there. Message is available if I do a modprobe acpi_cpufreq.

Code:
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.14-1.1644_FC4/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device
As I said, all was working fine before, the CPU throttled up and down as needed, but still at high end (I run folding@home, so it gets a workout) it wasn't that loud. Now it runs full bore.

This works wonders on my FC4 computer with AMD64X2. The cpuspeed box was in Desktop - System Settings - Server Settings - Services. I am gaining about 5.5% on my folding at home project with cpuspeed unchecked. I am using the non smp kernel, and haven't tried it under the SMP kernel as it is flakey.

Well, it is now 2.6.15, so that hasn't fixed it. Bugzilla said it would be fixed some time after 2.6.15. Or possibly the BIOS was the issue. Just updated the BIOS, and that didn't make any difference. It was all working fine before. Slowed down, stayed nice and quite. Hopefully it is fixed soon.

Booted to kernel 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4 for the first time this morning. I had previous performed a bios update, with no changes. As of booting with this kernel there were NO acpi issues.
