"yum install glibc-devel" = Error: glibc-common conflicts with glibc < 2.3.6

I just upgraded FC3 > FC 4. Then 'yum update', fine and dandy.

Then I tried to install glibc-devel (/media/cdrecorder/Fedora/RPMS
) and here is a copy of events.

That's a very odd error. Try doing "yum clean all" and doing the install again.

There is >3 gigs of yum cache on this system. I hesitate to do a clean all, even though it sounds right.
Is this my last resort option?

ps. there are quite a few older fc3 specific pkgs in the yum cache. If I delete those by hand, am I wasting my time?

This IS queer. Note that again it added 125 pkg's etc.
Please help sort this out! Maybe I should clean all anyhow. Even then, should I keep dries and dag active?

It is a bit risky, but I would:
remove the installed glibc
Code:
rpm --nodeps -e glibc
and install one more time the one from updates-released
Code:
yum install glibc glibc-common
But I am not sure, whether this works!

Removing glibc would be a horrible, horrible idea. *Everything* on your system uses glibc.

Cleaning your cache is perfectly fine, it's *cache*, it'll just download stuff again. I'll bet that 95% of that 3GB is actually packages with only a small portion of it being headers and metadata.

rpm -q --whatprovides glibc and rpm -q --whatrequires glibc may clue you in to something out of whack.

Disable the non-fedora repos and clear the cache.

If clearing the cache doesn't clean things up, then you might want to try "rpm -e --justdb glibc" and reinstall, but removing glibc with nodeps will leave you re-installing your system.

Whew! I'll take it slow.
# rpm -q --whatprovides glibc
glibc-2.3.6-0.fc3.1
# rpm -q --whatrequires glibc
bluez-bluefw-1.0-6
sed-4.1.4-1
authconfig-4.6.12-1
prelink-0.3.4-3
bluez-hcidump-1.18-1
ppp-2.4.2-7
openldap-2.2.29-1.FC4
bind-9.3.1-14_FC4
#

And why did I need this in the first place? Cause I had to:
# rpm -Uvh compat-gcc-32-3.2.3-47.fc4.i386.
rpm error: Failed dependencies: glibc-devel >= 2.2.90-12 is needed by compat-gcc-32-3.2.3-47.fc4.i386

Thanks

Can't I just first install, via rpm,

1. glibc-2.3.5-10.3.i686.rpm 23-Aug-2005 14:07 5.7M
2. glibc-common-2.3.5-10.3.i386.rpm 23-Aug-2005 14:07 15M
3. glibc-devel-2.3.5-10.3.i386.rpm 23-Aug-2005 14:07 1.9M
and if required , one of the following
glibc-headers-2.3.5-10.3.i386..> 23-Aug-2005 14:07 596K
glibc-profile-2.3.5-10.3.i386..> 23-Aug-2005 14:07 1.1M
glibc-utils-2.3.5-10.3.i386.rpm 23-Aug-2005 14:07 100K

and AFTERWARDS remove the fc3 specific pair of rpm's?

Thanks;

Those packages are the cause of your problem, FC4 should have glibc and glibc-common version 2.3.5-10.3. Use "rpm -U --oldpackage" to replace the FC3 libraries with FC4 ones.
