freezes during boot Part II

just got fedora core 3 (me=brand newbie) and being a microsoft junkie, don't know squat about it. installed it.....everything worked ok.....then did an update that i thought would take all day......but now it freezes during boot at "starting printing system"......everything......keyboard, mouse etc. freezes and i have to hard reset it.....any ideas?

Part II....i turn on computer...pressed I to enter interactive startup....enter [Y] yes all the way down until "start service cups"....if i enter [Y] it freezes...if i enter [N] it continues and i can keep entering [Y]'s until complete and fc3 works fine.......anyone know how to fix this?

If you don't need printer support right now, you can disable the CUPS daemon at boot using
chkconfig cupsd off
There could be something wrong with the CUPS configuration, try reconfiguring it and test the configuration using
service cupsd start

You said you could enter the interactive boot , choose N for cups and login correctly. Do that and login. Run this command and restart. This time there is no time to enter the interactive boot as cups will no longer be started

many thanks for your attempts to help me but i'm afraid i'll have to trash this whole installation; more problems with boot are compounding the last one....it's not worth the time to me.....a lot of other things in the operating system don't work either......it seems to me like this whole linux thing is about fixing....fix fix fix fix.....nothing is stable......no wonder it is "free".......its all garbage!

Don't get that idea!

Just wait until you get a virus on your Windows machine and have to wipe the system. My friend is always having trouble with electronic microorganisms (lol), but he refuses to switch.

Download Fedora Core 4 and give it a shot. I don't use Windows anyone unless I have to. Linux is the way to go.

Come on, just give it a shot. Don't give up THAT easily. If I had given up that easily, I would have never discovered how good Linux can be.

can someone please give me a reason why none of these linux distributions work?.....i mean every one of them i've tried is just crawling with problems!......most of them you can't even download.....and when you finally get one to boot after all the time consuming work involved, it either crashes or freezes or creates a gross combination of errors or other complications that involve an enormous amount of time to correct.....i was willing to keep on truckin' with this one until i ran out of time and patience, since i finally got it going.....but my question is.....what is the advantage of having a linux operating system over microsoft or mac?.......i really need to know because i'm thinking of having my head examined for all the time i have wasted trying to get a linux distro to function properly....i need some encouragement....
