Volume controls don't do anything?

I'm outputting sound to my receiver through the digital spdif on my soundcard, and for some reason, I'm not able to control the volume through any means in fedora. the volume control in the top right corner doesn't do anything, and when I'm using something such as xmms to play music, changing the volume slider doesn't do anything! am I doing something wrong?

I had that problem when I was using my on-board sound. I installed a SBLive! Value I had sitting around, and the sound problem was fixed. I'd check the hardware list to make sure your audio hardware is supported.

hmm.. yes, it is a built-in audio plug. how is it possible that a built-in chip isnt' supported? i'll do some research like you said.
