black screen with "Out of range" message

Hi everybody,

I installed FC3 on a Dell Optiplex GX620 machine and I cant seem to set the screen resolution to anything higher than 800x600. If I do it and restart X windows, the screen becomes black with a little message in the center saying "Out of range" and only way to fix ti would be to go to a console screen, login as root, edit xorg.conf file and delete all resolutions higher than 800x600 in screen set-up line. After that I get the login screen and everything.
Any idea what is this about? Thank you.

Renat.

the 'out of range' message is directly from your monitor, nothing to do with fedora.

it basically means that you're trying to use a screen mode that is either too big/small or too high/low frequency for your monitor (so editting xorg.conf fixes this).

You find this a lot with LCD monitors, a lot of them can only do 1280x1024.

Find the specs of your monitor and create a ModeLine in your xorg.conf to match it.

so 1280x1024 is the magic number for LCD's
thank you, sej7278!
