unable to get Mozilla Java plugin to work

I have not been able to get my Mozilla Java plugin to work. I am trying to get the current time from http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Central/d/-6/java I tried very hard to follow the directions at http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#rpm but it still says that I need the java plugin. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

The Java section here may be helpful.

I am a new user. I have not yet been able to get the Java plugins working for Firefox or for Mozilla. I have followed the steps of a lot of the suggestions that I have seen in this forum. Since I am a new user I have completely reinstalled Fedora Core 4 (the complete installation) a number of times.

While searching for “Mozilla plugins” in Google/Linux I came across the following: “Currently it is not possible to use a free Java Virtual Machine as a Mozilla plugin because most of the free JVMs do not yet support the Java AWT (Java GUIs). So the non-free alternatives from Sun, IBM, or Blackdown are required.” http://www.togaware.com/linux/surviv...lla_Java.shtml I am curious about any comments.

I would really like to understand Linux and experiment with setting up one of my computers as a server. Since I can’t even get a web browser working I am pretty discouraged. While working on this the one thought that has come to me is, “Bill Gates and Microsoft, you have NOTHING to worry about.” If it is this hard just to get a web browser working in Linux I doubt it will ever be a serious challenge to Microsoft in the largest market, the home computer market.

Grand help folks, good community effort. Also, if you 'forget' where java is run as root
updatedb
locate libjavaplugin_oji.so

Highlight it, click 'edit-copy' then move the cursor where you want the 'path' to appear, and click 'edit-paste'.
Yeah, I am lazy. LOL!

Here is a list of plugins I've installed and soft linked.

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nphelix.xpt
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/mplayerplug-in-gmp.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/mozplugger.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/mplayerplug-in-qt.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/mplayerplug-in-rm.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/mplayerplug-in.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nphelix.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/mplayerplug-in-wmp.so

I appreciate all the suggestions that I have gotten. I still do not have it running yet. “Steve” asked if I am running 32 or 64 bit? I am 32 bit.

I do not want waste space in this forum. For any who might want to check out in more detail please see http://home.austin.rr.com/jhsaxman/java_plugin.html

Jonhumphrey, I'll give you one more suggestion. If you've used SMFinley's instructions, I have no doubt that java is properly installed in your machine. I had no luck getting it to work on the Firefox 1.0.7 either, despite checking and re-checking the symlink carefully. Should have worked...just didn't!

In the end, I simply went to http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ , downloaded the latest version and installed it in my /home directory. Then I modified the symlink instructions to point to /home/(username)/firefox/plugins and it works perfectly. Once that's working, you can always do a desktop link to /firefox/firefox and launch it instead of the default browser.

I tried the suggestion of “justol‘bob”. I got the same thing but I got a bunch of error messages.

[root@localhost firefox]# ./firefox
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/lib/i386/libdeploy.so: /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/lib/i386/libdeploy.so: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied

there were many more lines

Any suggestions now?

I did try to execute my original Firefox as a command line command but it did not show any error messages.

By the way, I am frustrated, but I am also very grateful for so many people taking their valuable time to try to help me out. Thank you.

Just to make sure you have it right - assuming that jre1.5.0_06 is installed in /opt - from SMFinley's instructions:

su -, password

ln -s /opt/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /home/username/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Now, from your last post, it seems that you've chosen to put it in /usr/java - if so:

ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /home/username/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Change username to whatever yours is.

If I go to /home/jon/firefox/plugins and enter "ls -l" I get

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 58 Feb 15 09:52 libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jon jon 19496 Jan 24 18:32 libnullplugin.so

This shows me that a symbolic link is set up. It also shows me that the owner is root and everyone should have read, write and execute permissions.

This is what I did to solve all my java problems and IMHO it is the best solution.
Follow this instruction How to JRE RPM and use my modified spec file which I will post later --- I am at work.

Attached is my modified spec file
Attached Files
File Type: spec jre.spec (3.9 KB, 71 views)
