if you guys are using windows to download use dowload accelator plus it does great things for you: http://www.speedbit.com/ Or install this extension in firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...cation=firefox
BTW, it is KDE based but it is great and fast. ALL RPM!

It looks like a re-edition of "Mandrake-Move", with an hd-install option (and without tuxracer ).
The only great things I see are the "DiskDrake" program, far better than gparted/qtparted, and the short boot time it requires.
Too "mandrake-like" for me.
Knoppix is better.

I also noticed it was missing tuxracer but you can install it via sypnatic. I've also used mandriva in the past so I still like it. Boots up pretty fast.

I can't seen to find the link anymore but I believe the people putting out PCLinuxOS are talking about using Ubuntu as their base now!!! Not sure which version will be or if they go that route at all...
Just a useless piece of info!

What is your source of information? PCLinuxOS has been around for a while and it's some how a part of mandriva.....

Had a chance to install it this afternoon. 1st impressions are pretty good. For reference, I installed to p3 @ 1.0ghz with 512MB RAM and 20GB IDE HD. Onboard sound and video.
One thing I liked was the the installer cd is actually a LIVECD. So, you can boot up and see what the system is going to look like and what it includes before you decide to take the plunge and actually perform an install to the hard drive. When you are ready for that step, there is a shortcut on the desktop to do the install. On my box, the install took approx 40 minutes.
Second, the desktop and interface will feel very familiar to a Windows based user. This might make a transition easier for them.
Having MP3's play immediately and flash/java support is nice. With Fedora, following the stanton finley guide or otherwise is easy enough, but to a person new to Fedora, it just looks like Fedora is broken and crippled.
The only complaint that I would have thus far is NOT including Open Office. I'm sure this is just a simple download and install, but it would have been nice if it would have been included by default.
Now, if they could just get some more bandwidth to their site, I might actually recommend downloading this to somebody new to Linux.

Well, you are obviously not downloading it from the main website download link,
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...glish/preview/
Only getting about 20k from that site tonight.

Download time? We all have to sleep, don't we?
I currently have a WinXP partition on hda1. FC4 is on hda3. Both boot without any problem. At least I think so, haven't booted XP in a long time.
Now....what I've done is slaved a Maxtor 80 gig, which I partitioned into 8.... an ext3 and a swap, and another ext3 and a swap, and etc. It can be seen with hardware browser, no problems.
I put PCLinuxOS on hdb1, with it's swap hdb2. (8 partitions on hdb)
I knew, going in, that I'd need to be careful, so I didn't install a bootloader when installing PCLinuxOS. I knew I'd probably have to edit grub to get it to be an option, but though I've read through here and a few other sites, I'm still... let's just say (perhaps) overly cautious.
My agenda? If you want to know the truth, I install cable modems for a living. I've seen Windows machines with up to 7,000 viruses and spyware packages. (No, I'm not kidding. The recordholder was this really cute girl about a year ago. It took 25 minutes for her machine to friggin start.) I've seen new machines that wouldn't boot, ever, from all the crud. The most recent was a girl two days ago, with a 6 month old Dell laptop. I see this kind of thing every friggin day. I've gotten into the habit that when I first touch someone's machine, I do msconfig, remove all the checks, and reboot....then leave it alone if it reboots and acquires an IP ok, going further if there are still problems. That's why I use FC4. I know nobody here is in love with Windows, but to be honest it's gotten to be the "highlight" of my day, touching a Windows machine. And that's why I want to find (though myself, I'm very happy with FC4) a distro that is easy to migrate Win users with. I have four people, so far, at work that are sick of Windows and looking for something else. I want to be able to help them, without overwhelming them.
How do I edit grub the right way?
Aplogies in advance if I should have started a new thread instead of replying to this one.

Thanks, imdeemvp. I'm moving forward with your suggestion with enthusiasm and confidence; I've read and followed enough of your how-to's successfully that .... for example, I'm only showing 29 posts. Without having read yours, bytesniper's, and Stanton Finley's posts, the number of my posts, looking for help, would be immensely higher.

Still not a lot of luck, just too sleepy. PCLinuxonline.com still a little vague. Will look further into it later.
Thanks for the hints...
Carl.

You can help the distro by purchasing for a small fee which is what I did in with fedora and could not complete the download. http://on-disk.com/product_info.php/products_id/69
