Do you see the screen with the different boot options - copy2ram, etc? Press 'e' twice to edit and add a parm to the boot instructions. Press spacebar then type 'xdrv=vesa' (without quotes). Then press enter and 'b' for boot.
This is what I have done to get the livecd to boot with my ati card. After install, it's easy to get the 3d ati drivers working as you add 'dkms-ati' from synaptic, then either run the config tool for your graphics card in the control center, or run 'XFdrake' as root in the command line - the result is the same.
Is this a bit of a pain? Yes, but I've already run into a couple of distros that will not boot on my ati system at all (Sabayon and Myah) but will boot on my son's nvidia system. Might have to go nvidia for my next upgrade
