Odd message on boot-up

During the boot process, I recently started getting a message as follows:
usb 1-2.4 device decriptor read/64, error -110
first it was as cups was starting, then xfs
now i don't get it with cups but still with xfs and sometimes smb service satrtup
is this impending hardware failure?
also, i can't seem to access any gui through a terminal since this message started to appear. Has anyone else seen this message and is there an easy fix or am i hooped?
