smp kernel lockup on scp xfer

I'm running fc4 kernel 2.6.15-1.1833_FC4smp. During a scp transfer (in either direction) the
transfer runs for a few seconds then the entire machine locks up. Machine is a dual Pentium II
400 MHz on an Asus P2B motherboard. Same hardware worked on RedHat 9. Any suggestions
(except where to put this machine) are greatly appreciated.

have you tried using a non SMP kernel?

this would at the very least help narrow down the problem

also, have you done your updates through yum? seeing the 833 kerenel i assume so, it may be worth reverting to see what happens

re:smp scp lock up

Thanks for the reply. There are no hangs using 1 cpu. Yes I've been updating using yum and
have had this failure under kernels from 2.6.14-1.1656_FC4smp to the present (I didn't try it
on any older Fedora kernels).

How about a custom compile?

I find my computer runs much smoother and quicker on a kerenel stripped of all non-necesary modules
