F27 Development Forum Pretty much exactly what it sounds like it is. This is the place to discuss and assist in the community development of F27. WARNING: Any pre-release versions, Beta included, are for experienced testers only. Back up all existing data and read all threads in the version Development Forum before attempting an install. Errors can and will likely occur which may include data destruction or inability to boot other partitions on any and possibly all attached hard drives. While FedoraProject needs and appreciates testers, you must remember to report issues directly to Bugzilla, after checking for pre-existing bugs.

2017-09-05 - Fedora 27 Beta Freeze

Fedora 27 Beta package freeze is now in place. If you don't know what this means read on.

here's the new default background

Quote:
Hi all,

Today is an important day on the Fedora 27 schedule[1], with two
significant cut-offs.

Today is the Beta freeze[2]. This means that only packages which fix
accepted blocker or freeze exception bugs[3][4] will be marked as 'stable'
and included in the Beta composes. Other builds will remain in
updates-testing until the Beta release is approved, at which point the Beta
freeze is lifted and packages can move to 'stable' as usual until the Final
freeze.

Today is also '100% code complete deadline' Change Checkpoint[5], meaning
that Fedora 27 Changes must now be code complete, meaning all the code
required to enable to the new change is finished. The level of code
completeness is reflected as tracker bug state ON_QA. The change does not
have to be fully tested by this deadline'.

Finally, Fedora is not doing Alpha releases[6] anymore by keeping Rawhide
at alpha quality.

Regards

Mohan Boddu

Anyone hit by the shim bug on F27 and Rawhide about two weeks ago?

Was quite the disaster ...

Re: 2017-09-05 - Fedora 27 Beta Freeze

not personally, F27 is confined to a VM. I haven't faked an UEFI setup although I could in there. The shim has been buggy since F25 for my notebook, it's why I keep Fedora installed on a USB thumb drive. Every time there is a kernel branch upgrade rather than a point release it would end up bricked, so I now keep windows and Fedora separate and neither can interfere with the other.

It seems like F26 was only just released. Short cycle for this one I guess.

Re: 2017-09-05 - Fedora 27 Beta Freeze

it does appear shortened, it's looking like a 4-month release schedule even allowing for slippage into November.

Yeah this one is a short one to recoup with release schedule because F26 was delayed more then planned. And probably to get a new version of Gnome out earlier.

Re: 2017-09-05 - Fedora 27 Beta Freeze

Why not upgrade GNOME for F26? Other spin DE get upgraded after release when the new version hits stable. MATE for example has been backported many times over the years to older versions of Fedora.

It would be better to do that than rush an entire OS re-base through just to get back on schedule.

Re: 2017-09-05 - Fedora 27 Beta Freeze

One advantage of the freeze is that the small bug fixes can be done. Another is documentation and translation.
